The wait is finally over, the first of its kind, Dasani Discovery Challenge has announced its esteemed members of the Jury. Last year in November, Dasani, the purified bottled drinking water brand of The Coca-Cola Company launched the Dasani Discovery Challenge to address the issue of plastic waste management in Pakistan. The Challenge invited participants to submit brilliant new ideas which are practically doable and highly effective to counter growing plastic pollution. Ideas submitted can focus on any area within the broader domain of plastic waste management, i.e. reduction in plastic use, collection of plastic waste, its sorting and recycling. The Challenge successfully closed on January 15, 2019 and we received 70+ entries in total.

The judging criteria for each entry will be to evaluate on the basis of 5 categories mentioned below, with each criteria category to be given a score on scale of 1 to 10. 

a) Originality of idea: (10 marks)
b) Practicality of idea: (10 marks)
c) Quantum of potential impact: (10 marks)
d) Cost structure:(10 marks)
e) Long-term scalability/sustainability: (10 marks)

SHORTLISTING: 10 entries receiving the highest scores will be considered the short list. These shortlisted entries will then be invited to give a short presentation to the judges, on the basis of which they will be further marked. The 3 entries receiving the highest final marks will be declared as the winners and will be awarded the first, second and third prizes.

1. Jehan Ara:


Jehan Ara became the President of P@SHA in 2008 and has overseen the evolution of the organization from a trade association to a body which works actively to empower the technology sector in Pakistan. A decade of meticulous planning culminated in the birth of The Nest I/O, a tech incubator built in collaboration with Google for Startups (previously Google for Entrepreneurs), Samsung and the US Consulate General. With Jehan at the helm, The Nest I/O has become the epicenter of disruptive innovation in the local technological ecosystem. Recently, she was also appointed to the Prime Minister’s Task Force on IT and Telecom.

Entrepreneur. Leader. Mentor. And a friend to all those who have known her, Jehan Ara continues to inspire us with her boundless energy and zest for life.

2. Nazifa Butt:


Nazifa is on a mission to help organizations build environmentally sustainable businesses through the WWF-Pakistan’s Green Office Initiative. She is an enthusiastic environmentalist by profession and has been extensively working in this field since 2003, particularly on solid waste management, safety and health and low carbon cities. She has successfully completed many projects including solid waste, plastic and recycling, reviewed innumerable EIAs, developed and conducted environmental campaigns and trainings for academia and businesses, being a certified Environmental Lead Auditor for ISO 14001-2015, she has been conducting Green Office Audits in Pakistan and internationally.

Having excellent marketing and communication skills, she has been able to expand the WWF Green Office Initiative beyond borders, to Bangladesh and has been successfully running the entire program since 2011, in WWF-Pakistan. She, through this program has helped organizations to cut down their carbon emissions, promoted recycling initiatives and renewable energy resources and reduce the waste generation and continues to do so.

3. Nazish Shekha:


Nazish Shekha is a Sustainability Specialist specialising in natural resource management. Nazish is currently Senior Research Associate at the Pakistan Business Council’s Centre of Excellence in Responsible Business, in charge of developing the online research initiative on private sector initiative on Pakistan’s commitment to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. She has also worked as a consultant at TBL-Triple Bottom Line, a sustainability advocacy platform at Asiatic Public Relations Network (Private) Limited.

Nazish has a Master’s degree in Poverty Reduction: Policy and Practice from School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) , and an undergraduate degree in Environmental Sciences from King’s College London. Nazish has taught undergraduate students on Environmental Issues and Sustainability in Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, NED University and Szabist University. . Nazish also delivers trainings in relation to climate change, as a resource consultant to Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF). 

4. Zohare Ali Shariff:


Zohare Ali Shariff is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Asiatic Public Relations Network (Pvt) Ltd. As the CEO he is responsible for all business operations of the agency and personally counsels high profile clients on communications and PR strategy, stakeholder engagement, and on corporate social responsibility. He is also the co-founder of TBL – Triple Bottom-Line (, a CSR and sustainability advocacy platform. In his professional life, Zohare Ali Shariff has interacted extensively with the media and the government at all levels and has also served in an honorary position as consultant to the CDA in Islamabad. With over 35 years experience at the senior management level, he is an experienced trainer in media management, CSR, strategic writing and crisis communications.

He holds a B.Sc. (Honours) degree from the London School of Economics & Political Science, U.K., has lived and worked in the U.K. and the U.A.E. besides Pakistan, is a published author of award winning books and has traveled to over 45 countries of the world.
